| CATHEDRAL OF S. LORENZO |  | | Buildings of great religious and civil value surround the Cathedral of S. Lorenzo. Symbol of the city's faith and opulence, the cathedral carries in itself the signs of the transformations which the building has undergone throughout the centuries.
In origin it built with Romanesque, in the thirteenth century radical conversion to the Gothic style was carried out. |
| PALAZZO DUCALE |  | | The Palazzo Ducale, located on Genoa's most elegant square, is now the cultural centre of the city. Its construction began during the Republican period.
Today, Palazzo Ducale offer all sorts of art exhibitions and activities, and it houses a bookshop, a jazz museum, a poetry room and a great cafe restaurant. |
| PALZZO S. GIORGIO |  | | "Palazzo S. Giorgio", the headquarters of the Port Authority since 1904, is named from the Casa di San Giorgio. It was the first bank of the world.
This building was built in 1260 and changed several times during the years till being perfectly restored in the last years, so it's a mixture of very different architectural styles. |
| S. MATTEO'S CHURCH |  | | S.Matteo's Church built from Martino Doria in 1125, as chapel. It is situated in the centre of the city area.
In the course of the centuries the original construction was restructured, then in the 1278 the church was totally demolished so it was built one new inspired at the gothic style. | MUSEUMS
| NATIONAL GALLERY OF PALAZZO SPINOLA |  | | The Palazzo Spinola, located in Piazza Pellicceria in the heart of the city's historic centre, became a National Gallery in 1959 when it was donated by the Marquees Spinola to the Italian State.
Its treasure includes an important collection of paintings by noteworthy Genoese artists, such as Van Dyck's "Portrait of a Child", "Ecce Homo" by Antonello da Messina. | |
